Analysis: Man Utd start off their champions cup tournament with a win over Roma. It was 3-0 at half time so the second half was a bit of a disappointment. Rooney scored twice and Mata added another showing that it was another brilliant attacking performance from United. However, United faltered in the second half after Van Gaal took off the stars and seemed shaky especially with the defense. However, there was some good signs as United showed some mental toughness to see out the game without their best players. This shows that Van Gaal has already changed United's mental state as last season it was very poor under Moyes. Constant last minute equalizers from opponents would ruin United's morale and in order to be successful this season United will have to be able to keep leads. This is the first step to showing this mental strength but what matters is whether United will be able to do it in the real tournaments.
